Yorkshire's Specialist S.E.N.D College.

Changes At Camphill

The last twelve months have, as we all know, been some of the most extraordinary of most of our lifetimes. I am personally hugely thankful for all those connected with Camphill Wakefield, be it the newest student, parent or the longest serving trustee or volunteer, who has worked so hard to keep the college going in the last year and everyone as safe as we could have done. At this time of change, we will also be saying goodbye to a number of staff who have had a significant role in their time at Camphill. Beccy Rudge is leaving for a new challenge; she originally joined us as a receptionist and after a brief spell away came back and has been a key part of our HR team. Stephanie McDermott, who has been our bursar for the last 14 years, has decided to retire and spend more time with her family and grandchildren.

Some of you may have heard that I am also going to retire this summer. It has been a difficult decision, but after my wife, Liz, with whom I shared 35 years living and working on site, died last Autumn I feel that the time is right to move on. I leave an incredibly dedicated team and a College and community ready for the next challenges and what the future will bring.
The trustees are delighted to be able to share the news that they have appointed Caroline Smale as an interim Principal to continue the work at Camphill, support the wonderful team and help find the right long term successor. Caroline has held the position of Principal in 3 SEND Colleges in the North of England, leading educational, residential and specialist multi-disciplinary services. She has a career spanning 35 years in service to SEND education. Caroline has worked in 3 FE colleges in a range of SEN Tutor and Additional Support management roles where she enjoyed developing work- related learning opportunities for students, working with employers to transition students into the world of work. Caroline is passionate about removing barriers to learning for SEND students through using mobile technology and developing learner voice within an innovative curriculum.
Caroline trained as an Inspector and more recently has worked as a SEND Educational Management Consultant. In this role Caroline has enjoyed varied assignments, including interim leadership, health checks, curriculum reviews and development, quality improvement, SEND funding & financial management, SEND HR recruitment, organisational restructure and management. Caroline has contributed to national projects, worked for National Associations and mentored Principals and senior staff.

Caroline has knowledge and experience of different forms of regulation and she particularly enjoys supporting organisations to identify and demonstrate their best and unique practice to Ofsted. Caroline has been an inspection nominee and has led Specialist Colleges through Inspection to success outcomes.

I will be working with her until the end of term to handover everything I am doing. I would like to take this opportunity to wish her and everyone at Camphill Wakefield well for the future.
